Brick Chimney (Class 1 application)

Brick Chimney

Class 1 Flue
Usually of masonry construction (identifiable by a chairbrick at the back of the opening), the flue must comply with the Building Regulations for Class 1 (solid fuel) appliances, with a minimum diameter of 175mm (7") and a minimum equivalent height of 3 metres.

A Class 1 flue usually terminates with a brick or stone built chimney.

Pre Fabricated flues (Class 1 & 2 applications)

Pre Fabricated flues Class 2 Flue
Usually of metal construction and found within newer homes. Typically constructed using twin walled flue with a minimum diameter of 125mm (5") and a minimum equivalent height of 3 metres.

Precast Flue (Class 2 application)

Precast Flue

Pre-cast Flue
Usually of pre-cast concrete block construction (hollow concrete blocks which form part of the inner skin of the dwelling) that terminates with a ridge tile.

There are two main types:
a) Pre 1986 - the chimney should have a minimum cross sectional area of 210mm x 65mm throughout and a minimum equivalent height of 3 metres.

b) Post 1986 - the chimney should have a minimum cross sectional area of 16,500mm2 with no dimension less that 90mm and a minimum equivalent height of 3 metres.

Power flue (No chimney application)

Power flue

A power flue appliance is an electronically operated fan system connected to a open fronted gas fire. This is specifically designed to extract the harmful products of combustion (fumes) away from the burning fire. It also simulates the flow rate of a conventional flue. The fan unit is normally surfaced mounted on the outside wall (as illustrated in picture). However their are other types that can be recessed into the wall further.

When the fire is not in use, some natural air circulation may occur through the flue terminal. This is considered normal.

An electric is normally required when installing these apppliances.

Balanced Flue (No chimney application)

A balanced flue appliance is a room sealed glass front product, which when installed to an outside wall, expells the product of combustion (fumes) out through a twin walled metal pipe. The outer pipe draws air in from the outside for the combustion process to work efficiently. Then extracts the harmful gases out through the inner section of the pipe.

There is no electric supply normally required for these appliances
.

Flueless

Flueless gas fires require no chimney or flue and are 100% Efficient.
Catalytic technology has been utilised to "clean" the products of combustion and as a result, these fire can be installed almost anywhere there is a natural gas supply. This excludes bedrooms & bathrooms.
